Anybody who isn’t privy to Anathallo — the ex-Mt. Pleasant, MI indie-folk collective now living in Chicago and signed to mf’ing Antic…er, uh, maybe we’re not supposed to say that yet — is seriously missing out. Some beautiful jams coming out of those kids (peep “Noni’s Field” from the upcoming Canopy Glow for starters).

We must admit that we were a little sad when we heard that multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost recently left the group to join emo-country band Steel Train (yikes), but we’re a bit more excited about this “fun” new project he’s working on. Actually, the band itself is called Fun (yep, Fun), and also features ex-the Format front man Nate Ruess (cool, Dog Problems wasn’t too bad) and Steel Train member Jack Antonoff (who?). The trio are working on a new record, to be released in 2009 on Nettwerk Records, alongside producer/Red Kross member Steven MacDonald (what!?) and ex-Jellyfish guitarist/arranger Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (seriously!?). If their demo of the poppy-as-fuck “Benson Hedges” (hear it here) is any indication, we’ve got a new power-pop contender in our midsts. — Ryan Allen

Headed up by Detour faves like Maps & Atlases, Anathallo, Child Bite, Deastro, and Great Lakes Myth Society, Midwest Fest 2008 starts tonight! Think of it as a little like Rock City, except in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and at one solitary place (Rubble’s Bar, where Black Flag and R.E.M. both played; no, not together). It’s still really close to a casino, though. But we’re willing to bet you’re going for all the sweet bands, right? Right. Peep the full line-up and schedule here. Oh, and while you’re up there, stay far away from the Wayside Bar. Trust us. — Ryan Allen
