Headed up by Detour faves like Maps & Atlases, Anathallo, Child Bite, Deastro, and Great Lakes Myth Society, Midwest Fest 2008 starts tonight! Think of it as a little like Rock City, except in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and at one solitary place (Rubble’s Bar, where Black Flag and R.E.M. both played; no, not together). It’s still really close to a casino, though. But we’re willing to bet you’re going for all the sweet bands, right? Right. Peep the full line-up and schedule here. Oh, and while you’re up there, stay far away from the Wayside Bar. Trust us. — Ryan Allen

When we got word that a new Von Bondies song would be featured on the upcoming soundtrack to the upcoming Lost Boys flick (subtitled The Tribe, as it were), we got more excited than Corey Feldman did when he heard that he would actually be cast in the movie (sorry Haim; maybe next time). With Jason VB sounding more like Glen Danzig than ever before, click here and listen to their new “Only To Haunt You,” along with other tracks by the Hold Steady and, well…nobody else worth mentioning. Oh, and don’t be alarmed when you click the link and the new Miley Cryus starts blasting from the speakers — just scroll through the top and click on the Lost Boys image. We know how that shit can haunt you. — Ryan Allen

Motherfucking Watchmen. The Dark Knight got us moist but this flick is going to stick it in sideways.
While this guy was busy jacking off to the trailer, we scooped up this exclusive image of the new Entertainment Weekly cover due out this week. And if you were busy hitchhiking your way to Comic Con and missed the trailer, here it is in all its Quicktime splendor…

The Nuggets-style garage bombast of Montreal’s King Khan & The Shrines is hitting Detroit (well, Pontiac, but whatevs) for the very first time Monday, July 21 in the sweaty, happenin’ confines of the Pike Room. And hey, guess what? We’re giving away some tickets.
So, click here for your chance to win!

From the press release:
Mason Proper and Hott Garbage Music Videos are shooting a video near Detroit for a song off the band’s upcoming second album, Olly Oxen Free, and they are looking for people age 18 or above who are comfortable free-form dancing on camera. People under 18 can apply if they REALLY want to be a part. Everyone’s face will be concealed by a mask. If you’re an actual dancer, especially a popper/locker/jazz dancer/freaky contortionist/double-jointed, they especially want you. The best dancers will be (more…)

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Matt Allen (aka Ice Cream Man) here’s the scoop: dude travels around the country non-stop in a 1969 Chevy step van handing out free ice cream to hipsters at some of the biggest music festivals as well as doling out the goodness to sick kids at hospitals. We’ve shared Astro Pops with him at SXSW and Lollapalooza and he’s truly one of the “good guys” in the indie scene. As of today, Matt and his crew have already (more…)

Congrats: Detroit lo-fi punk stars Tyvek (did you catch them on MTV recently?) are set to join the Black Lips, Black Mountain, the Notwist, and more for the relaunch of Sub Pop’s Singles Club this summer. Needless to say, Ben Blackwell is super excited about this. — Ryan Allen (Via Pitchfork)

Albert Hammond, Jr. is streaming his second solo album, Como Te Llama?, over at his MySpace page RIGHT NOW. It’ll be up for a week, though, so don’t freak (it comes out on July 8 via RCA/Black Seal Music). While you’re there, check out his top friends, including ex-”That 70s Show”-er Danny Masterson, Sean Lennon, and some band called the Strokes. This dude must be, like, famous or something! — Ryan Allen
