MP3: Boo and Boo Too, “I’ll Be Your Whore”

Detroit is chock-full of amazing shows this week, from Friday’s Nice Device CD release at the Magic Bag to School of Seven Bells, Deastro, Javelins, and Zoos of Berlin over at the Pike Room. We’ve got Jay Reatard and Man Man tonight, the Silent Years on Saturday, and Mates of State and Minus the Bear on Sunday. Who says nobody good ever comes to Detroit?

Anyway, we thought we’d give props to the D’s very important DIY scene, and tip you off to another rad show going down TONIGHT at the Trumbullplex featuring noisy shoegaze punks Boo and Boo Too (from Lawrence, KA), along with revolving art project Benny Stoofy, and our favorite lady rapper Breezee One. We know that most of you will probably be sloshing around to Man Man’s pirate pomp, or getting gnarly with the Reatarded one, but if you’re feeling adventerous and in the mood for some newfound sounds, this’ll be the perfect show to see before launching that blog you’ve always wanted to start. — Ryan Allen

Here’s Boo and Boo Too playing “Alleys In Whitechapel” in Akron, OH.

Here’s a video for Benny Stoofy’s “What’s There To Dew”

And here’s Breezee One, straight lounging.

Brooklyn spaz duo Matt and Kim get all old skool hip hop and shit on their new song “Daylight.” The track comes courtesy of Green Label Sound, Mountain Dew’s new MP3 download site. M&K are just the second artists to release a song via Green Label; the Cool Kids released a track earlier this year and two more bands are slated before the end of ‘08.

MP3: “I’m Not Afraid Of A Fight”

This Friday a trip to Corktown won’t exactly make up for your inability to drop everything and take a road trip to Chicago to see My Bloody Valentine, but it’ll still give you a chance to exercise your shoegaze demons. Lansing’s Fields Of Industry make fuzzed out dream music that would fit perfectly on a mixtape with The Velvet Underground and Galaxy 500. Frontman Joshua Barton, when asked to expound on the notion of “the shoegaze label” said, “The shoegaze movement means a lot to me personally because it was that whole scene that pulled me out of listening exclusively to the Ramones (not that that wasn’t fun). I’ve never considered us a shoegaze band, but I think we’ve taken cues from shoegazers and many others who have tried to make something “beautiful” out of rock and roll.” Check out their tune “I’m Not Afraid Of A Fight” from Two Dogs, A Television which they released earlier this year and watch the charming video for “Point Of Contention.” Then go see them Friday — they’re playing with Detroit’s Indian Guides and Modernlull, along with Slow/Dynamite from Brooklyn. A guaranteed dreamy evening. — Laura Witkowski

This Saturday at the Lager House — oops, our bad…PJ’s Lager House –  is going to feel a little bit like 1999, and a little bit like 2008, all rolled into one rippin’ night. Why, you say? Well, Detroit rock heavyweights the Hentchmen, the Muldoons, and garage rock newbies the Dial Tones are all releasing hot slabs of vinyl on the same night, courtesy of Bellache Records!

Now, we all know Hentch and the Muldoons have more than a few releases under their belts, but this evening will bring the very first offering from the Dial Tones. The 6-song debut EP comes correct via 33 RPM 7″, which is totally badass, but if you’re all new-school and don’t have a record player for some stupid reason, we’re going to do ya’ll a favor and give you the A-Side to what the Dial Tones like to call The Hot Dogs! EP. Eat ‘em up!

It might be unknown to some, but Chuck Inglish — one half of neon-hued Chicago hip-hoppers Cool Kids — originally hails from Detroit. Those in the know, however, are going to get a healthy reminder of Inglish’s hometown pride during a verse from Cool Kids’ “Pennies”; a verse that is dedicated almost entirely to Bad Boys-era Detroit Pistons. Shout outs to Chuck Daly (aka “Daddy Rich”), Auburn Hills, MI (”home of the Palace” obvs), and our boy Isiah Thomas not only remind us of how awesome it was to be alive in 1989 and 1990, but also make us yearn for the days that the Pistons dominated teams by basically beating the living shit out of them, you know, physically. It’s hammer time, ya’ll! Click here to stream/download. (Via Gorilla Vs Bear) — Ryan Allen

Who likes free shit? If you raised your hand, well, you’re pretty gross. Who likes free music, though? Oh, now everybody raises their hands. Well, lucky for you, our boy Deastro has just put up some free jams he calls Voyager (which, coincidentally, was the name of the cover band one of our dads played in back in the 80s) on his blog. Download it here — oh, and click on the cover for the good stuff. — Ryan Allen

Deastro plays tonight w/ Pretty & Nice + Snark & Skirt @ The Lager House

MP3: “Green Light”

Soul crooner John Legend collaborating with Outkast’s Andre “Movie Star” 3000? Okay, we can see that. But then getting remixed by MSTRKRFT, who have turned Legend’s song “Green Light” into an all out badass club banger? Well, even we couldn’t have called that one (and we’ve been known to predict the winner of a few reality shows in our day). Regardless, the song is the jam, and a welcome addition to MSTRKRFT’s already impressive list of remixees (Bloc Party, Kylie Minogue, the Gossip, Kid Sister). — Ryan Allen

When we got word that a new Von Bondies song would be featured on the upcoming soundtrack to the upcoming Lost Boys flick (subtitled The Tribe, as it were), we got more excited than Corey Feldman did when he heard that he would actually be cast in the movie (sorry Haim; maybe next time). With Jason VB sounding more like Glen Danzig than ever before, click here and listen to their new “Only To Haunt You,” along with other tracks by the Hold Steady and, well…nobody else worth mentioning. Oh, and don’t be alarmed when you click the link and the new Miley Cryus starts blasting from the speakers — just scroll through the top and click on the Lost Boys image. We know how that shit can haunt you. — Ryan Allen

Freak Out Friday is your weekly fix of private press, DIY label, in your pants, under your tongue, psych, folk, soul, punk and all other genres you can’t remember or think of. Trust us, get these tracks.

MP3: Apple Cider”

Good morning bitches! Here is a ripping track that has been dominating our lives for the last year. Not much info is out there on these dudes — and “Apple Cider” is the only song we’ve been able to find — but from what we’ve read on the “boards,” most of the album, or rather their overall output, is weak. This fucking track though is enough for now. Seriously, blast this shit out. Trust. — Brandon W.
