The Pyramids, Pyramids (Hydra Head, 2008)
Listen: “The Echo of Something Lovely”
Not to be confused with the Archie Bronson spinoff group Pyramids on Domino, or the 1960s surf band the Pyramids (big single: “Penetration”), this Pyramids hails from Denton, Texas, which apparently has been uprooted from the surface of the Earth and is now floating on the jet stream, making its way toward Miami. The band’s self-titled album is a drifty mess of lingering guitarscapes augmented with some dude singing nearly wordless vocals in a daydream falsetto. This isn’t Sigur Ros, so there probably are words. It’ll just be very clear to anyone who hears “The Echo of Something Lovely,” “Igloo,” or louder, more clanging material like “Hellmonk” that words are as important to Pyramids as, say, writing a real melody. So while they have both of these things at least in part, it’s all poured into this cauldron of fuzz that’s so large as to make everything else the band does insignificant in comparison. No one’s saying this is a bad approach, though. Look to the skies, and watch out for cities that float on the air displaced from amplifiers. — Johnny Loftus
