CJ7 (Stephen Chow, 2008)
Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle kingpin Stephen Chow returns to Western cinema with CJ7, a film that, from the looks of its trailer, has no problem riffing not only on Chow’s typical penchant for sight gags, slapstick, and pop culture thumbscrewing, but also creature/robot/alien-as-pet films such as Gremlins, Short Circuit, and the 1989 sub-ET daytime cable classic Mac and Me. There is sure to be loads of comic relief, and hapless hamming from Chow in the lead role; the alien looks cute enough, but also slightly menacing, which is perfect. When Chow’s character pushes and pulls on CJ7’s bulbous green body, marveling at its resilience, even in the trailer there’s some apprehension from the audience. Don’t F with that alien too much, dude. He might grow into a giant monster and eat you. You know, or something. All in all, this should be a good one. Now if only Chow’s character drove a Jeep CJ-7, there would be perfect synergy. — Johnny Loftus
