We hear feedback from people all the time. The majority of it being good and constructive; some of it downright nasty. A small portion of it is even quite captivating in its idiocy. But we listen to all of it. And we discuss it. And sometimes we act on it.

Truth is, 90% of the changes we’ve made to Detour have been driven by listening to our readers. As we embark on our second year of publishing, we’re looking to you again. Please take five minutes to fill out our survey and help us continue to improve the (more…)

Dave Matthews wins! First, it was My Morning Jacket. Then, fucking Radiohead, for God’s sake. Now ATO Records — the label founded by Matthews — just recently signed our favorite MILF-rocker, Liz Phair. (more…)

Young@Heart (Stephen Walker, 2007)

“Experience the film that brought audiences to their feet…” etc; cue soft fade into wide angle tracking shot that envelopes you in the crushing sense of love that we’re all in this together. Or something. MOVE THAT BUS! is what it should say. We’re not allowed to love old people singing Clash songs in our own way — now (more…)

Crystal Castles, Crystal Castles (Last Gang, 2008)

Listen: “Courtship Dating”

Unicorns, lizard men, and birds having sex show up in the photos on Crystal Castles’ MySpace as much as Ethan Kath and Alice Glass, the human duo behind the Toronto crypto-pop phenomenon. The collection of tattered shots combine the real and unreal (more…)

Skidoo (Otto Preminger, 1968)

If all of the patients suffering from dementia at your local convalescence center put on a play about mobsters and hippies, it might look a lot like Otto Preminger’s Skidoo. Jackie Gleason stars as Tony Banks, a retired torpedo who’s tapped by God (Groucho Marx), the head of La Cosa Nostra, to bump off George “Blue Chips” Packard (Mickey Rooney) before he turns state’s evidence. In order to “kiss” his (more…)

The Raconteurs, “Salute Your Solution” (Warner Bros., 2008)

Doesn’t this sound a lot like “Blue Orchid”, only with two frontmen and more blowsy 1970s-inspired riffing? It’s still sort of awesome for drinking seven beers in a can to. But then again, so is Head East’s Flat as a (more…)

The Detour Guide to 1970s TV Detectives: Part Two
By Johnny Loftus

In the first part of our guide to 1970s TV detectives, we touched on the trailblazers and the genre definers, the guys (and lady!) who used their singular eccentricities and sense of cool to help write the book on how a main character should carry a show. They also wore cool hats and grew great mustaches. For part two we expand outward, (more…)

Saviours, Into Abaddon (Kemado, 2008)

Saviours‘ first for Kemado features more of the intersecting riffage and swarming thrash/stoner tempos that dominated the Bay Area combo’s debut long player, 2006’s Crucifire. (Yes, Crucifire. Metalheads will never run out of devilish grammatical constructions.) “Narcotic Sea,” “Raging Embers,” and especially “Cavern (more…)

Cryptacize’s official Asthmatic Kitty bio mentions the smell of burnt sugar as the California trio’s principal influence, which, taking “bittersweet” to the very limit of its descriptive abilities, comes through pretty effectively on Dig That Treasure, the trio’s full-length debut. Dig to Cryptacize drummer Michael Carreira’s Meet & Greet (more…)
