Rachel Hurley describes her workday like it’s no big deal that she publishes two blogs, contributes to the independent music Web site BreakThru Radio, and maintains the blog of Memphis’s legendary Ardent Studios. How does she find the time to check her email (she does, barely), watch cable TV (she doesn’t), or defend the musical integrity of John Mayer (which she does, apparently)? Discover the answers to these queries and more below in this for plate-spinners-only Meet & Greet. — Thomas Rooker White

Where are you based in real life?
Memphis, Tenn.

How did the site get its start? Its name?
I started Rachelandthecity.com when I lived in NYC in 2003, then when I moved to Memphis in 2004 I started Scenestars.net. Now I do a bunch of radio shows on Breakthruradio.com and also write and blog for them. I also do the Ardent Studios blog.

Does the nature of what you do make you hate the phone / human contact?
I do hate the phone, but still like human contact. (As long as he knows what he’s doing.)

List your must-checks every morning (read: what’s in your RSS feed)
I’m really not that anal about it the these days. If I can make it through everything in my inbox, I’m pretty satisfied. I guess I check Myspace everyday, but that’s about it. I get so many CDs in the mail that I really have to focus on making sure I listen to them and not get sidetracked with the interweb. Which is the same reason I don’t have cable.

Favorite blog/website besides your own…
Largehearted Boy
is always good. Also love USA Today’s Pop Candy.

Favorite record of all time…
Not gonna happen. I could never pick one. I could pick favorites for certain situations, but don’t get me started. This year I am digging Sea Wolf, Leaves in the River; Cloud Cult, The Meaning of 8; and Dappled Cities, Granddance.

Favorite movie of all time…
Again, I could never pick one. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Princess Bride, Trainspotting, Labyrinth…

Favorite TV show of all time
“Arrested Development,” “The Office,” “Grey’s Anatomy” (Shut up!), “Lost”; only things I can watch on demand on the interweb.

Actor/actress/blogger you’d most like to hump…
Ryan Gosling, but only because of Half Nelson, not The fucking Notebook.

Your guiltiest pleasure. The thing no one would believe you watch, read, or listen to…
Chuck Klosterman, who I think is like a super midwestern dork, but I still read every new book that comes out, then end up being pissed off at the end at how boring he is. I have also been in many internet brawls over John Mayer, defending him as a musician. It’s a long story.
