“Cinebeats is basically a news, review and information site about film,” Kimberly Lindbergs says of her blog. And it is, even if that makes it sound like a database clearing house for prattling boilerplate. But based on volume alone, Cinebeats is beyond that. Plus it looks really cool — there are plenty of images of great old films to go with the text — and Lindbergs writes about wacko independent horror films from 1970s Great Britain with as much knowledge and insight as she does the films of Louis Malle. Plus she likes Pizzicato Five. And that’s just awesome. Take it away, Kimberly. — Johnny Loftus

Where are you based in real life?

The beautiful San Francisco Bay Area.

How did the site get its start? Its name?

I’ve written for zines and small press magazines on and off again for about 20 years, but I’ve never written in-depth about cinema and I really wanted to give it a go since I’ve been obsessed with movies since I was a kid. I started blogging because it’s a fun and easy way to self-publish.

The name Cinebeats sort of just came to me one night when I was watching Paul Naschy’s film Panic Beats. I love movies (Cine) and movie soundtracks (Beats), plus I’ve always liked old crime movies featuring wisecracking reporters who are “on the beat,” so I suppose I got some inspiration from old slang as well.

Does the nature of what you do make you hate the phone / human contact?

I’ve always hated using the phone and I’m a bit of a hermit by nature. I’ve been known to make excuses not to attend parties just so I can stay home and watch a movie or read. These days I spend a lot of time at home and on my computer, but I enjoy it. Thankfully I’m in a great relationship with another hermit so I get plenty of human contact.

List your must-checks every morning (read: what’s in your RSS feed)…

Cinedelica, Cinema Retro, TCM’s Movie Morlocks blog, Videowatch Blog and Greencine Daily are blogs and sites that I try to visit daily.

Favorite blog/Web site besides your own…

Lala-a-gogo, That 60s Girl, Mondo Digital, Midnight Eye, Tom Lisanti’s Sixties Cinema, Mod Culture and Jeremy Richey’s Moon in the Gutter blog are just a few favorites.

Favorite record of all time…

I really love soundtracks by composers like Ennio Morricone, Stelvio Cipriani, Piero Umiliani, John Barry and Lalo Schifrin. A few of my favorite records are The Rolling Stones, Aftermath; The Velvet Underground & Nico; David Bowie, Station to Station; Miles Davis, Birth of the Cool; Elvis Presely, Sun Sessions; Tom Waits, Rain Dogs; Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Tender Prey; Pizzicato Five, Made in the USA; The Doors, Waiting for the Sun; Amon Tobin, Bricolage; Bauhaus, Mask; Buck-Tick, Darker Than Darkness; and Françoise Hardy’s self-titled record from 1964.

Favorite movie of all time…

Favorites include Le Samourai (1967); Performance (1970); Contempt (1963); La Dolce Vita (1960); Hiroshima mon amour (1959); Blowup (1966); Danger Diabolik (1968); Modesty Blaise (1966); High and Low (1963); The Tenant (1976); The Innocents (1961); Youth of the Beast (1963); Blood and Roses (1960); The Brides of Dracula (1960); If…. Favorite TV show of all time…
The original “Twilight Zone,” “Lost In Space,” “The Avengers,” “The Wild Wild West,” “The Monkees,” “The Banana Splits, ” “The Night Stalker,” “The Prisoner,” “The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.,” and “Speed Racer” would probably make my Top 10. At least for today.

Actor/actress/blogger you’d most like to hump…
The French actor Alain Delon. He’s 75 years old now, but I’d happily jump into bed with him if the opportunity ever presented itself.

Your guiltiest pleasure. The thing no one would believe you watch, read, or listen to…

Besides my doll and toy collection which I obsessively photograph, classic movie musicals are a big one. When you mention the word “musicals” to a lot of people they often cringe, but I can watch films like West Side Story, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, The Young Girls of Rochefort and Bye Bye Birdie over and over again, and somehow I never get tired of them. I also love vintage romance comics and manga published in the 1960s and ’70s.

As if there weren’t enough reasons to love Kimberly Lindbergs, she named her blog after a Paul Naschy movie!
