MP3: “Green Light”

Soul crooner John Legend collaborating with Outkast’s Andre “Movie Star” 3000? Okay, we can see that. But then getting remixed by MSTRKRFT, who have turned Legend’s song “Green Light” into an all out badass club banger? Well, even we couldn’t have called that one (and we’ve been known to predict the winner of a few reality shows in our day). Regardless, the song is the jam, and a welcome addition to MSTRKRFT’s already impressive list of remixees (Bloc Party, Kylie Minogue, the Gossip, Kid Sister). — Ryan Allen

Chromeo, Fancier Footwork (Vice Records, 2008)

MP3: “I Am Somebody”

It’s only been a year since the release of Chromeo‘s Fancy Footwork, and now Vice Records graces us with a deluxe edition to commemorate the occasion (read: are cashing-in). Putting aside the question of whether this is even necessary, or why anyone would try to market a deluxe edition to the generation that will be responsible for the eventual death of the CD, Fancier Footwork delivers a compendium of Chromeana, including five videos, a few of the more popular tracks from the group’s first LP, She’s in Control, and scads of remixes from the likes of MSTRKRFT, DFA, and others. While the original album stands on its own (and with a little help from those lean, mean lady limbs), there is some solid remixation and extras waiting 4 U on Disc 2. “I Am Somebody” is credited to label mate DJ Mehdi, “featuring Chromeo,” but Dave 1 sings this passive-aggressive plea to pass over to the other side of the velvet rope, with Pee Thug’s synths sizing up the beat like the big, bad bouncer of the song. Playgroup’s remix turns She’s in Control‘s “You’re So Gangsta” from a rather repetitive, silly affair to a soulful groove with a serious back story about obsessed fascination, which kind of turns the whole idea of Chromeo on its head. So perhaps our Chrome-bros can get away with this fancier version of last year’s summer line, but new duds cost flow, yo. — Scotter Bragg
