Matt and Kim + Best Fwends + Charlie Slick @ The Magic Stick [11.10.08]

Monday night shows in the D are tough. Combine that with a shitty economy and chilly temps and you get a quarter-filled Stick regardless of a stellar lineup. Didn’t matter though; each act swung for the fences but we couldn’t help but wonder what this would’ve been like in the cozy confines of the Garden Bowl. The evening started out with Ann Arbor’s Charlie Slick and co. playing a glittery, confetti-filled set, warming up the crowd and perhaps pissing off the people at the Magic Stick who have to sweep after shows. Best Fwends left me talking with a bit of a speech impediment, not only because of their name but because I got smacked in the mouth with an inflatable gargoyle. They reminded me of Champions of Breakfast, minus the ridiculous Continue reading “Matt and Kim + Best Fwends + Charlie Slick @ The Magic Stick [11.10.08]”

Matt and Kim, “Daylight” (Green Label Sound, 2008)

It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Matt and Kim here at Detour. Wasn’t it us that brought them to Detroit for the first time, and made all ya’ll dance your balls off to hits like “Yeah Yeah” and shit? Yeah, yeah — we thought so. Well, last week we gave you the track for their newest jam “Daylight,” so now it only makes sense that we hook you up with the video, too, right? Check it, as Matt and Kim jam in bed, in the back of a cab, and in a dumpster — which is probably a really tough show to get on the guestlist to. — Ryan Allen

New Matt and Kim Track Tastes Like Tangy Grape Mountain Dew Slurpee

Brooklyn spaz duo Matt and Kim get all old skool hip hop and shit on their new song “Daylight.” The track comes courtesy of Green Label Sound, Mountain Dew’s new MP3 download site. M&K are just the second artists to release a song via Green Label; the Cool Kids released a track earlier this year and two more bands are slated before the end of ’08.

Rock City Recap: Day 1

The opening night of Rock City went down with a gigantic bang, and if you weren’t there, then we’re going to assume that you somehow locked yourself in the bathroom getting ready for the big event. Lucky for you, we were there (well, we kinda had to be, right?), and despite a night spent having our brains zapped by some

Matt and Kim: Mega, Mega Picture Post

There’s a song bouncing around in the back of our brains; something about, “All you need is drums to start a dance party.” Whoever sang it surely knows what they are talking about. But, what if you add a keyboard to the mix? Well, then you have Brooklyn’s furiously fun Matt and Kim. We caught an electrifying set by them at this past SXSW (at a parking garage, documented here), and came away solidly believing that they were the
