The Afghan Whigs, “Gentlemen” (Elektra, 1993) // Screaming Trees, “Nearly Lost You” (Epic, 1992)
The Gutter Twins — the intense collab between Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan — did us all a solid and just announced a summer tour in support of their raunchy debut, Saturnalia. But before these boys were meeting in dark bars to guzzle gin and write poison-tongued poetry together, they slugged it out as frontmen for alt-rock journeymen the Afghan Whigs (Dulli) and Screaming Trees (Lanegan).
In the clip for the Whigs’ “Gentlemen” you are instantly welcomed into their world; a seedy and dramatic one that looks like it could have been filmed on the set of “Melrose Place.” The Trees’ vid is the polar opposite. No sexy co-eds; just dirt, tractors, and fat dudes in shorts. It was, however, included on the soundtrack for grunge-love movie Singles, so maybe there’s a connection there somewhere. — Ryan Allen
