The Slip is available as a high-quality MP3 or in a variety of lossless formats including, for the first time, a higher-than-CD quality 24 bit 96k version. All downloads include a PDF with credits and artwork.” Then, after you’ve visited NIN.com, provided your email, visited your inbox, clicked on the email from NIN, provided NIN.com with your “download widget,” and chosen the format you’d like the files to be in, you can listen to some rage-filled, electro-industrial shizz from Trent Reznor and his pals. It’s free, and he’s just trying to accommodate everyone on the Internet, which is cool. But after all that, wouldn’t it be easier for Trent to develop some kind of software-based record store clerk who’d give you the stink eye? The Slip is pretty solidly Nine Inch Nails. Unlike the recent Ghosts set — a largely instrumental, experimental album seemingly overtaken by the miasma of Internet weirdness that surrounded it — The Slip is clangy and angry and full of a furiously breathing Trent. It features cranky drum machines, howling guitars, and keyboards that burble like black jizz from a red light district sewer. In short, these dudes are still angry about something. But it can’t be the record companies, so what is it? Who cares. Once you’re done downloading The Slip, you can use the money you saved to buy a Downward Spiral T-shirt and slam your head against a wall. — Johnny Loftus
