Awesome Color, Electric Aborigines (Ecstatic Peace!, 2008)

Listen: “Come and Dance”

Their 2006 debut was just what their name suggested — a hoary, explosive blast of garaged-up scuzz and punk rock damage that bled in every color imaginable, and some that weren’t. For fans of the electric guitar, Awesome Color doesn’t disappoint, and it’s the same with Electric Aborigines, the Brooklyn trio’s second full-length for Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace! imprint. These kids are young. But not only do they sound old, they sound seasoned. After a noisy freakout with opener “Eyes of Light,” Awesome Color drops “Already Down,” a song as pulsing and savage as anything Josh Homme might think of. Other highlights: “Come and Dance,” an acid rock standout led by a keening organ line and vocalist-guitarist Derek Stanton’s fluttering wails (seriously, who sings like this dude in the 21st century?), and “Step Up,” which struts like KISS and sounds equally old for Awesome Color’s youth. These three must have a time machine shaped like a Gibson SG. — Thomas Rooker White
