Duffy, “Mercy” (A&M Records, 2008)

“Yeah, but the UK one doesn’t have so much people in it, and it’s simple and nice. But she’s defenitely one of my favorites<3!” So it’s written somewhere on YouTube about this clip for “Mercy” from Duffy, a young Welsh singer who the UK press includes in its “New Amys” category. Duffy has Bernard Butler in her corner, and that’s cool. And her take on a slinkier Aretha gone partly Dusty is nice enough, the way most of these young soul-influenced British girls can bring it. It’s pop-ready, she can sing, she’s a looker, and there’s a proven market, so Duffy probably isn’t going anywhere soon. But at the same time, there isn’t much here to make us think this is better or worse than her competition. But you’ll love it when it hits “Grey’s Anatomy,” just like you knew you would. It’s soul time. Again. (Here’s a link to the original video for “Mercy.”) — Thomas Rooker White
