It was an easy enough reason to start a label. As Curran Blevins says, he started First Flight Records in Lancaster, Penn. as an outlet for the work of the band he’d been in at the time, Fifth and Elm. The label is pretty strictly local to Lancaster for now, and Blevins gets to it when he’s not managing another Pennsylvania band, Circus Circus. But he says First Flight has plans to release more stuff in the new year. Blevins also admits to loving “Gossip Girl,” which breaks the mold for most Profile subjects we interview, who more often than not profess an obsession with “The Hills.” — Thomas Rooker White
Who runs the label?
Where is the label located? Describe your digs…
Lancaster, Penn., home of an awesome music scene with many flourishing artists. It is close enough to the big city of Philly, while Lancaster is a city itself but it also has enough space and freedom.
How did the label get its start? Its name?
It started because the band I was in at the time (Fifth and Elm) didn’t have a label to release their EP. So I started First Flight and thought, “Hey, either this thing is gonna do good or crash and burn.”
How many releases do you issue a year, on average?
Not many at all, it’s all for friends or acts around the area. We had a few bands out of town such as a band Six Speaker City and Adeline’s Hero from New York City, but it’s mostly an independant release. I’m usually too busy managing Circus Circus which has also released some things on FFR, but now they’ve moved to an AWESOME label Ci Records, which is also located in Lancaster.
True or false: Digital downloads are okay, but 7″‘s are cooler…
TRUE. Totally. The artwork is a huge part of the music. HUGE.
Favorite label besides your own…
Favorite record ever…
Young Mountain, This Will Destroy You
Favorite movie ever…
I don’t really watch too many movies, but I totally want to see the new Batman and Iron Man.
Vegetarian or carnivore?
Your guiltiest pleasure. The thing no one would believe you watch, read, or listen to…
“Gossip Girl.” It is such an addicting show. You just start watching it then BLAM!
