Leatherheads (George Clooney, 2008)
It’s not Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday, but the snappy banter between George Clooney and Renee Zellweger in this trailer for the upcoming Leatherheads is certainly madcap and romance-fueled enough to get away with its homage. Sometimes Zellweger’s squinchy face and suspecting eyes seem out of place with contemporary Hollywood, anyway, so she’s probably a good foil for ol’ Cloons and his gallantly glowering grin.
As for the rest of this romp set in the fields of American football clubs as the sport grew in popularity after World War I, well, we’re sure that there will be a lot of clotheslines, not to mention great lines for the guys (and girl) in the media booth, since Sports Illustrated scribe Rick Reilly is one of the film’s co-writers. We would’ve liked to see a football movie delve a bit further back and into the bloodier entries in the sport’s official history — bring back the flying wedge! — but Clooney can’t really do any wrong lately, and his name is all over the Leatherheads masthead, so we’re going to predict plenty of snappy dialogue and some solidly zany romantic misadventures. Oh yeah, and clotheslines. — Johnny Loftus
