Zoot Woman returns with this advance single from the British combo’s third full-length, due out soon. And hey, now their name isn’t one of the worst ones going anymore. It used to suggest one of those weird, faceless acts that populate acid jazz compilations, but with the addition of an actual woman to the lineup — synth player Bee Hatherley — it somehow seems like a better handle. Nothing against Hatherley; she’s no ringer. She just makes the dudes look more convincing as a band, and not simply a bunch of talented producers.
As for “We Won’t Break,” Zoot Woman have retained their flavors of European house and slick, suited dance-pop. (They probably do a sweet Spandau Ballet medley when cajoled.) But “Break” also chops up its rhythms and dirties up the proceedings with enough mixing table squelch to get the people moving like they do for the latest singles out of the French electro cabal. Well played, Zoot Woman. Well played. This clip has love for Terry Gilliam. And drugs, probably. — Johnny Loftus
