Listen: “Cold Star”
[audio:http://www.detour-mag.com/audio/ColdStar.mp3]
Robert Bonilla (guitar), Corinne Dinner (vocals-guitar), Erik Greene (drums), and Jim Saunders (bass) make up LA’s the The Hectors, whose MySpace phrase is pretty awesome. “More apes, more ass, more arson, ” it reads, and that’s the shit. It’s unclear how that reflects in the quartet’s sunset blend of Sonic Youth guitars and pulsing, Saturday night indie rock (check the smooth vocals from Dinner), but it doesn’t make their Meet & Greet any more hilarious. And can we get a hand for the meat-eaters in the house? We’re just saying. — Thomas Rooker White
Worst fanboy/fangirl experience…
Jim: Once in while - and thank God it doesn’t happen too often - I’ll be up on stage looking really sexy and bringing the hot thunder, and I’ll catch the eye of a young lady in the audience, and it will be obvious that she isn’t remotely interested in having sex with me. She is simply enjoying the music. At first this really threw me, and hurt my feelings - sometimes I’d question why I’m even in this band - but now I’m at peace with it. Also, maybe she’s gay.
Robert: Remember kids, girls that have you sign a pair of panties at a show are not the type of girls you bring home to meet mama. Sorry, mama.
Favorite music venue/city…
Corinne: Radio Free Silver Lake puts on their “Let’s Independent!” monthly show at Boardner’s in Hollywood, and it’s always chock full of great bands and warm audiences.
Jim: We seem to end up at Spaceland (Silver Lake) and The Echo (Echo Park) a lot.
Vegetarian, vegan or carnivore…
Erik: Meat.
Corinne: Meat.
Robert: Meat and a small green salad.
Jim: Meat.
Actor/actress you most want to hump…
Erik: Shannyn Sossamon, Rosario Dawson, some dinner, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, drinks, Salma Hayek and Rose McGowan (together), some cuddling with Natalie Portman, and then I call it a night.
Corinne: Erik and I both have a thing for Natalie Portman, but after seeing her look like a 14-year old boy on that new Magorium movie poster, my infatuation has waned (though Erik’s has grown).
Favorite record of all time…
Robert: Pet Sounds. It’s also God’s favorite.
Corinne: The early Elliott Smith records.
Erik: Probably The Pixies, Dolittle.
Favorite movie of all time…
Erik: Okay, quick top 3: Rushmore, Waiting for Guffman, and Brazil.
Corinne: Wet Hot American Summer and Gandhi.
Favorite TV show of all time…
Erik: Hands down, Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant’s “The Office.” “South Park,” too.
Robert: “Arrested Development”; “Deadwood.”
Beverages you request on your rider…
Robert: Delicious, nutritious and smooth as Erik’s calves: Hendricks Gin!
Jim: Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale.
Corinne: Jameson and plenty of ice, lady.
First car…
Robert: 1974 AMC Javelin AMX. Nickname: The Millennium Falcon. First car AND… first time.
Guiltiest Pleasure - thing you watch, read, listen to - that no one knows about…
Erik: I know who Tom Marvolo Riddle is.
Jim: So do I.
