There’s a critical gush on the British Sea Power Web site that declares “Waving Flags” the festival song of 2008. Maybe; its imagery of united thousands holding pennants aloft is certainly worthy of, say, a crowd of 70,000 at Reading. But the lead single from Do You Like Rock Music?, the band’s upcoming third full-length is also a logical progression from BSP’s previous forays into knee-deep reverb and sensitive, if detached vocals. Embrace meets the Editors?
This clip doesn’t get very awesome until 1:40 or so, where the line “Are you of legal drinking age” coincides with the appearance of a guy in a bear suit flying a kite. It’s cut with images of the Brits going to war and random British Sea Power dudes waving their own flags, which is a nice way to tie that whole bit in, even if more bear suit and less guy-walking-down-hallway would’ve been nice. We can all wave our flag, and forget about the saber-rattling for awhile. — Johnny Loftus
