The Von Bondies, We Are Kamikazes Aiming Straight for Your Heart (Self-Released, 2007)

It’s been a minute for the Von Bondies, but if types want to play the “What have you done for me lately?” game, Jason Stollsteimer has a brand new heart, a brand new lineup, and four songs with the kind of thrilling ferocity to say “What?” to all comers.
The first of two EPs that will drop before Love, Hate, and Then There’s You, the band’s next proper full-length, the feel of Kamikazes is one of hackles removed, replaced with some kind of anger and release. “I don’t care anymore,” “I don’t want to see your pretty face again” — even at the level of his phraseology, Stollsteimer seems refreshed. But it doesn’t stop there. There’s the fiery kinetics at the outset of “I Don’t Wanna,” drumsticks clattering across cymbals, guitars that crank treble but keep it pop, and the unhinged “Woo-hoo”’s that reveal a band renewed. And there’s “Pale Bride,” too, its new wave echoes amplified with the shout that always defined the best Von Bondies material, but here feels like it’s emanating from a shard of iron in Stollsteimer’s gut. Maybe he didn’t want to fully acknowledge it before, but it’s a power source he always knew he had. He’s a true frontman now. Bring it. — Johnny Loftus
