They’re PLUG nominees now, so they have to be totally fantastic and awesome now, right? Not exactly (cough-Vampire Weekend-cough), but Sea Wolf (aka Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Alex Church and a revolving cast of pals) has something simple and special in “You’re a Wolf.” He sings of wine-stained lips and gypsy women with advice (is it “You’re a wolf, boy. Get out of this town,” or “You’re a wolfboy! Get out of this town!”?), and the cello rides the steady beat like a submarine in the current at cruising speed.”You’re a Wolf” is simple, just like a video with little more happening than indie people performing in a room full of taxidermy and shots of a girl wafting through a wooded area lit like CBS’s “Cold Case.” But simple can always be effective, and Church has that with this and other jams off Leaves in the River, the Sea Wolf debut on Dangerbird. Maybe there’s something to those PLUG nominations, after all. — Johnny Loftus[tags]Sea Wolf, Alex Church, Leaves in the River, You’re a Wolf[/tags]
