Night two of the 3-Day Detour Launch Party was even more crowded than the first. We’re getting tired of telling you: if you’re still on the fence, get off it. This afternoon Detour will take over CAID for a barbecue, and the entry fee for that is NOW JUST $10. (Note also that set times for the barbecue have been pushed back a half-hour each.) That’s 8 bands plus beers and BBQ for cheap. And then you can hit the Magic Stick tonight for another sick lineup. AND THEN, if by then you’re feeling like R. Kelly or a Misshapes kid or something, you can head back to CAID for an afterparty. Seriously, did we mention how fun all of this has been/is/will be?
As for Friday night’s showcase, it was action-packed. Were you there when Fontana blew the sauce off everyone’s pizza in the Garden Bowl? That band had the kind of bad attitude that you just have to love, plus the ability to unleash screeds of electric guitar havoc while stumbling backwards through a packed house. More like Fontan-stic. The girls in Serenity Court keep throwing us lefts and rights in songs, suddenly dropping into a different tempo and then back out of it like that’s the way pop music should always be played, and just about everyone in the Magic Stick wanted to ask Emily Gustfason to sing the messages on their answering machines. Johnny Headband? What began with a lengthy, purple-lit vamp that seemed at times like a Styx album in silky slow motion evolved into Keith Thompson wearing a giant inflatable Sparks can while head-banging in sync with his brother Chad. Their drummer wore headphones, too, which makes Headband even more awesome.
Carjack? He had LEDs on his shirt, and every song ended with a what felt like the ending of a Minor Threat song. (”FLEX YR HEAD!”) Robots love electro-punk. And the Hard Lessons? Back from a brief tour, performing new material, and seeming more energized (if that’s even possible) than we’ve seen them in awhile? Well, let’s just say that we were glad to see the Magic Stick packed to the gills for what those guys pulled off last night. And thanks for the shout-out, Augs. The Go closed it out with a real classy set, and the encore of “Meet Me at the Movies” was a proper way to rave-up a farewell.
See you in the sun at the Detour BBQ, or in the darkness later on. What, like you’re going to miss the reunion of Ko & the Knockouts?–Johnny Loftus

You forget to mention Terrible Twos. Only the 2nd time i ever saw them, and they’ve been 2 of the most intense/energized show i’ve ever seen.. Kids were getting kicked out for crowdsurfing in the Garden Bowl! What? That bass player even crowdsurfed and didnt miss a note.
Yeah, man. Terrible Twos by far kicked the absolute most ass of the entire weekend. They’re by far the best Detroit band. PERIOD. Did you know they just got off a nationwide, month long tour with the Frustrations? How about that? And I got kicked out for crowdsurfing.
