These days the Elephant Six Collective is best represented by Of Montreal, who continually spin the sweet pain of heartbreak (and the succulent sizzle of Outback Steakhouse!) into the most multi-faceted, blissful music imaginable. Kevin Barnes’ elaborate pop parade began in 1997 in Athens, Ga., and while line-up switches have been numerous, including the addition of Kevin’s wife Nina, the band has remained one of the E6 collective’s most consistent and curious exports. By the time Polyvinyl released Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? late last year, Barnes and co. were selling out theaters left and right, and still Barnes found an over-the-top way to capitalize on his pain. The swirling, effect-driven “The Past Is a Grotesque Animal” sneaks up slowly, while on “She’s a Rejector” he shouts in succession: “There’s the girl that left me bitter. Want to pay some other girl to just walk up to her and hit her. But I can’t-I can’t-I can’t.” It’s stark, it’s over the top. But somehow his pain is our pleasure. Of Montreal guitarist Bryan Poole took a break from Of Montreal’s current tour to ponder “WKRP in Cincinnati,” dating Winona Ryder and the wide, wide world of Internet porn. — Ava Dial

Worst fanboy/fangirl experience…

“There have been a few, but why dwell on the negative? Once a homeless meth addict showed up at a show and only saw our last song, which was Boston’s ‘More Than A Feeling.’ He loved it so much he gave me everything he had for a CD. I gave him our record, ‘Coqueliciot.’ Nothing like Boston that one. I’m sure he was confused, but who knows maybe it changed his life.”

Favorite music venue/city…

“The 40 Watt in Athens, Ga. I thought I could retire the first time I played there. My life was complete.”

Vegetarian, vegan or carnivore…

“I eat vegan whenever it is possible. I do eat fish on occasion.”

Actor/actress you most want to hump…

“I’m not much into that scene. I did have a super crush on Winona Ryder way back when. I hear I might have a chance there.”

Double Nickels on the Dime by The Minutemen.”
